    Aaru

The city of Aarau has been the capital of the Canton (region) of Aargau in Switzerland since 1798. The city, which is named after the River Aare above which it is situated, was founded nearly 750 years ago. Known locally as ‘the city of beautiful gables', Aarau became a municipality of the Bernese Oberland in 1415. Less than 40 minutes drive from Zürich, Aarau is easily accessible by road from all over Europe. Famed for its reputation as an art and culture city, it is immensely proud of its ancient heritage and many buildings in the ‘old town' are listed in an inventory of ‘sites to be protected'. The oldest building in the city, a medieval fortress and residential tower, houses a local heritage museum detailing several centuries of small town life in this fertile, quiet area. Aarau has become an important shopping centre in recent years and there are a wide range of sporting and cultural activities and attractions available in and around the city. A national league football club has its home ground nearby and it is a popular area for cycling, rock-climbing and nature walking. The cool forests north and south make for a pleasant day of exploration and the ‘Roggenhaus' game park has become popular with tourists. As a base from which to explore the surrounding area, Aarau is ideally situated. It has an excellent range of shops and boutiques, from huge designer stores to traditional watch shops. Within close proximity, all your needs are catered for. The city has an impressive range of eateries, a castle and theatres and, as you survey the area, you will find lush vineyards, thermal spas and quiet valleys.
