    Abbeville

One of the greatest bird watching locations in the world, the city of Abbeville in the Picardy region of northern France provides a pleasing base from which to explore the area to its full extent. Once hailed as one of the most beautiful towns in France, it was virtually destroyed in a German air raid in May 1940. The bombs destroyed the historical wooden buildings and the entire city was set alight. Today, almost all of the city's buildings are of the post-war period, although a few historical gems were lucky enough to survive the onslaught. Abbeville's church, Eglise St-Vulfran remains intact, even though it looks more like an elaborate gothic cathedral than a church. The old mint is now home to some of the region's finest medieval sculptures as well as tapestries and local ceramics. Geographically located on the Somme River, the area is famed for its nature trails which provide glimpses of rare birds which nest here. In the area, which is relatively unspoilt and undiscovered, there are excellent facilities for golf, riding and walking, in a pleasant fertile valley. The capital of the Ponthieu region, Abbeville's reputation as a modern commercial centre ensures that its unique identity continues to develop.
