Car Hire in Beauvais
Beauvais
Beauvais, in the Picardy region of France has been hailed as an excellent starting point for a tour of this magnificent country. The administrative centre of the region, it is also a trading centre for a wide range of farm goods produced nearby, such as fruit, dairy products and agricultural machinery.
Around 90km from the capital, Paris, Beauvais is attempting to reinvent itself as an alternative entry point to Paris. It has an airport, but it is not quite geared up for as much capacity as Paris, although this may turn out to be an advantage. The accommodation in Beauvais ranges from budget to luxury and it is ideally situated for visitors to explore the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
As it lies at the confluence of the Thérain and Avelon Rivers, there are plenty of leisure activities on offer nearby. Its strategic location means that it was targeted by the Germans during the war, suffering serious damage to its interior. The town was practically rebuilt after the war, in a more modern style.
The star of the town, however, has never been completed. Shrouded in scaffolding (which provides part of the appeal) is the highest uncompleted cathedral in the world. After its collapse in 1284, the town could not afford for it to be rebuilt. It has remained incomplete ever since.
