Belfast
Set by a river valley, sea lough and high hills, Belfast was a village in the 17th century and is now a city of almost half a million people, a third of Northern Ireland's population. Belfast has a long maritime tradition (the world's largest dry dock is here), and industries like rope-making and shipbuilding are much to the fore. The city centre is pedestrianised, making it a pleasant location for shopping or sitting to listen to the street musicians. There are many Victorian and Edwardian buildings, while places of interest include the Linen Hall Library (which includes a Robert Burns collection!), the Home Front Heritage Centre (housed with the Museum of the Royal Ulster Rifles) and the City Hall, built around 1903 and which dominates the shopping area. Belfast Zoo is world famous, while the port is renowned for building RMS Titanic. Belfast Castle was used as a war control centre during the Second World War, and by climbing Cave Hill beyond the castle you will find a splendid view over the city. After a strenuous walk, there is nothing better than to pop into the Crown liquor Saloon, one of the greatest bars in the world. A short drive away is the Giant's Causeway and coast, an area of outstanding natural beauty with forests, waterfalls, ruins and country parks. The world-famous Giant's Causeway consists of hexagonal columns of basalt which have led to the myths of ancient Irish giants.
