Chur
Sitting in a deep valley carved by the River Rhine, with three airports within a 150kms radius and good road links, Chur is ideally located as a starting point from which to explore the beauty of Switzerland. As the main city in the Canton of Graubünden, Chur combines the charm of its interesting sites (at an altitude of 600m) with the crystalline air of the Engadine Alps at an altitude of 1800 metres.
Chur is the oldest continuously inhabited city north of the Alps and archaeological finds from the area date back to 3000 BC. The ‘Old Town' has retained its character and is paved with cobbled streets leading to secret courtyards. The solid houses and a huge cathedral provide an intimate backdrop for some of the best shopping facilities between Zürich and Milan.
The surrounding scenery of White Mountain peaks and hidden lakes is the perfect setting for the plentiful range of excursions on offer. Horse-drawn coaches take visitors to the old wine press and the original ‘Heidi' house situated on the Graubünden Estate. If you prefer to travel under your own steam, mountain biking is extremely popular in the locale, as is walking in the mountains or gazing at the designer shops.
Chur is a sunny place, full of charm and character. Its many restaurants, bars and inns provide a wide selection of speciality foods, washed down with wine from local vineyards.
The whole of Switzerland can be explored if you start here and it's worth a few hours of your time to call in at the pretty resort of Arosa, southeast of Chur.
