The capital city of England, London is one of the truly great capitals of the world, with some wonderful historic monuments and fantastic family entertainment, and through it all flows "Old Father Thames", the lifeblood of the city when it first depended on trade from overseas. There are so many highlights, that it is difficult to know where to begin: as the cradle of democracy, you could try the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. The seat of the British Government, the New Palace of Westminster boasts the tallest square tower in the world, at 336 feet. Big Ben is the nickname of the 13 ton bell inside St Stephen's Tower. Westminster Abbey, from its founding by Edward the Confessor, has been the location for the crowning of almost every monarch over the last 900 years. It also saw the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997. Modern attractions include the BA London Eye, the world's highest observation wheel which takes a full 30 minutes to complete one rotation; and the Thames Barrier, the largest moveable flood barrier in the world. The Visitor Centre has spectacular views of the Barrier, as well as working models. London has an enviable reputation for quality shops: stroll down Oxford Street and Regent Street, and afterwards drop into a restaurant or fast-food outlet for refreshment before continuing! London really comes to life in the evening, so prepare for some long, enjoyable days!
