Glasgow
Originally a small salmon-fishing village on the River Clyde, Glasgow has developed into a city of international repute and culture - 1990 saw the city adorned as the European City of Culture. The history of the city is much in evidence: the cathedral dates from the 12th century, while the Provand's Lordship, the oldest house in Glasgow, was built over 500 years ago. More than two million tourists visit Glasgow annually, to stroll through the city's elegant Victorian streets, to see buildings like the School of Art, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and to indulge in some shopping. Glasgow is, in fact, the second largest shopping centre in the United Kingdom, and the city centre has three main pedestrianised thoroughfares - the famous Sauchiehall Street, Argyle Street and Buchanan Street, all of which offer everything you could need. For smaller, more intimate, boutiques and craft shops, try the West End. Glasgow has more than 20 museums and art galleries, and is also home to Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the Royal National Orchestra. One museum not to be missed is Scotland Street School, the Museum of Education. Here visitors are guided around the school and are taught the history of Scottish education since 1872. Each classroom represents a different period, from Victorian to the 1960s. Close to the city, in Victoria Park, can be found Fossil Grove, a 300 million-year-old forest.
