Grindelwald
Sheltering beneath the north face of the Eiger lies the town of Grindelwald. It has possibly in Switzerland, or more precisely the Bernese Oberland, the only glaciers that are within walking distance from the town. It is, by its position, a major centre for rock climbers and mountaineers and for the summer months the hiker and walker.
Well served by road and rail links, it is accessible for most of the year. Although a small place, Grindelwald has accommodation to suit most tourists' budgets with a small variety of restaurants, bars and tea rooms. Shopping is limited within the two streets of the town although the Co-op is well stocked with provisions.
Surrounded by beautiful scenery, it is a paradise for the walker and hiker. A lot of the popular and easy walks start either within the town or very close by. These can differ from glacier walking, to forest, to valley, to high meadow trails. For those wishing to go further afield, the local railway, cable cars or chair lift can get you much higher up where the walking is just as good.
In the town is the mountain guide's office which is well stocked, selling a wide variety of hiking maps and they can arrange activities such as guided walks, glacier walking, ice climbing and mountaineering. Across the valley from Grindelwald, is the longest cable car journey in Europe, the Mennlichen Gondelbahn.
