Hannover

The city of Hannover will forever be connected with the history of England, supplying as it did the British monarchs for over 100 years. The city itself is modest, while also being one of Germany's major industrial, commercial and transportation centres. One of the highlights of a visit to Hannover is the Rathaus, a large building built at the turn of the 20th century. An inclined elevator (one of only two in Europe - the other is in the Eiffel Tower) takes you up to the 10 metre dome. The Rathaus is situated in the pretty Maschpark and is a short distance from the artificial Maschsee, renowned for its beach, boats and restaurants. Hannover is full of parks and gardens, the greatest of which is Herrenhauser Garten. It is the only surviving example of Dutch/Low German early baroque-style gardening, with designs from France, the Netherlands, England and Italy. Here you will find the highest fountains in Europe, shooting jets of water up to 72 metres. There is also an open-air theatre offering plays by Shakespeare and Moliere. The Landesmuseum offers exhibits on European biology and geology, as well as the history of Lower Saxony from the Paleolithic Age. It houses an aquarium of exotic fish, amphibians and reptiles.
