Hull
With a seafaring tradition as an international port and a fishing base for sea-going vessels, the city of Kingston-upon-Hull (to give it its correct name) has many fine buildings, superb museums in the so-called "Museums Quarter" at the heart of the Old Town, art galleries, and Holy Trinity, one of the largest parish churches in England. Set on the River Humber, Hull remains largely a major industrial and commercial city, but there is much for the visitor to see. Close to Holy Trinity is Hands-On History, originally designed as a curriculum resource centre for schools, but which has proved popular with all ages. The ground floor covers "Victorian Britain" with interactive exhibits and on the first floor is "The Story of Hull and its People" and "Ancient Egypt", including a mummy of an ancient Egyptian priest. The great 17th century abolitionist William Wilberforce was born in Hull, and his house in the High Street is open to the public at no charge. Of special interest is the oak-panelled banqueting room. The Guildhall houses a fascinating collection of fine art, sculpture, furniture and silver, offering an insight to the city's Royal connections and civic commissions. Designed by Sir Edwin Cooper and completed in 1916, the Guildhall building is a prestigious building in its own right. Hull is the home of The Deep, the world's only "Submarium". Take a ride in the underwater lift, see Britain's only Grey Reef shark and learn about the world's oceans throughout time.
