Jersey

The largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey covers 45 square miles and has over 500 miles of roadway. During the tourist season, the population is doubled, as many visitors come for the mild climate and relaxing ambience. The summer climate is usually the warmest in the UK during the summer and the mildest in winter. Jersey has over 30 beaches and bays, as well as some of the cleanest waters in Europe. The islands became a British dominion after the Battle of Hastings, when William the Conqueror, King of Normandy, took the English crown. Over the centuries, Jersey has fought off many invasions, including the Battle of Jersey in 1781 when French troops tried to take over the island; although all of the Channel Islands were occupied during the Second World War. Possibly the most famous attractions on Jersey are the War Tunnels and Ho8 (the German Underground Hospital). This complex of tunnels houses "Captive Island", an award-winning exhibition. Try also le Mare Vineyards and Distillery - stroll through the vines, orchards and gardens before moving on to learn about the art of distilling and ageing the famous Jersey Apple Brandy. There are more than 200 restaurants on the island, each offering a fine selection of menus - Jersey is renowned for its seafood, Jersey beef, potatoes and vegetarian dishes. The fine Victorian Central Market in Beresford Street is perfect for fresh fruit and vegetables.
