Liverpool

Forever linked with The Beatles, Liverpool's history as an international port and bustling city goes well back beyond the 1960s! King John granted Liverpool a charter in 1207, turning it from a tiny 12th century fishing village into a city of immense prestige, especially during the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was the landing point for sugar, spices, cotton and tobacco from the Americas. Now, the Albert Dock has been refurbished, and many of the warehouses have been converted to shops and visitor attractions, making Liverpool more than just a port set on the River Mersey. Albert Dock was opened in 1846 and, after its decline in the last century, it now houses the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the Tate Liverpool, as well as many shops, restaurants, cafes and wine bars. The city's two cathedrals are connected, appropriately, by Hope Street. The Catholic cathedral was designed by Sir Edward Lutyens and was started in 1930, but the Second World War interrupted construction. A new architect designed the rest of the cathedral after the war, and building was finally completed in 1967. It has often been called a "space-age cathedral". The Anglican cathedral was begun in 1904 and was completed 11 years after the Catholic cathedral! It is the largest church in England and the fifth largest in the world. The organ has almost 10,000 pipes. The house where Beatle Paul McCartney lived now belongs to the National Trust. Restored to its 1950s appearance, the house is open only for organised tours.
