Nuremberg
With a history going back over 950 years, it is unfortunate that Nuremberg will forever carry the shadow of the events of the Second World War and the War Crimes Tribunals which followed. Rather than trying to bury the past, the city has created a Documentation Centre museum which includes guided tours of the courtroom and exhibitions. The Zeppelinfield arena, where Hitler staged his dramatic rallies, is also open to the public. The city was heavily bombed during the war and has been sympathetically restored - some of the finest churches in Germany are here, while you can also see the ruins of the ramparts that once surrounded the city. The Altstadt (Old City) has now been predominantly pedestrianised. The largest church in Nuremberg is St-Lorenz-Kirche - it took over 200 years to complete, while much of the stained-glass dates from the 15th century and the pillars are adorned with sculptures, the oldest of which was carved in 1285. The Kaiserburg was the official residence of the German kings and emperors. Built high on a hilltop above the city, most of its buildings were constructed during the 12th century, and the complex offers an interesting display for visitors. Nuremberg is renowned for its gingerbread products and handmade toys: the Spielzeugmuseum (Toy Museum) on Karlstrasse has three floors filled with exciting exhibits, some dating from medieval times. There is a collection of dolls houses and a mechanical Ferris wheel.
