Saint malo

Built on a granite rock in the Channel and joined to the mainland by a causeway, St Malo is a popular location for British visitors, and can be somewhat crowded at the height of the season. The peninsula curves round a natural harbour and the walled city emanates from the Cathedrale St-Vincent and the town's chateau. For the best view of the bay, take a stroll along the ramparts, some dating back to the 14th century. The cathedral, on Rue St-Benoit, is known for its 1160 nave vault and Renaissance west façade, while the Chateau de St-Malo now houses the Musee de l'Histoire de St-Malo, filled with souvenirs of pirates and privateers. On Tuesday and Friday you will find a fantastic Breton market on Place de la Poissonerie and Halles au Ble, in the heart of the old city. Here you will find country-fresh produce, fish and cheeses, as well as local handcrafts. Traditional Breton lace, pottery, Celtic souvenirs, almond-flavoured pastries and sugar-coated galettes can be found in and around Rue Broussais. The casino is a popular venue for dinner and a show, as well as the gambling; while there are numerous pubs and clubs which offer a wide range of beers and settings as diverse as a real Irish bar with a French flavour and a bar fitted out like the interior of a yacht! Beyond St Malo, you will find long stretches of quiet beaches with rocky outcrops.
