Vannes

Created by the Veneti, a Gallic seafaring tribe, Vannes is justifiably proud of its history: once occupied by the Romans, it became the capital of Breton until 1532, when Rennes became the capital. The old quarter of Vannes is still partially surrounded by the ancient walls built by the Veneti, and the narrow, winding streets of half-timbered houses are crowded with shops, bars and restaurants. The focal point of the town is the old gateway of the Porte St-Vincent, which overlooks a busy little square at the north end of the harbour. The town is set on the Gulf of Morbihan, an area comprising 800km of fine sandy beaches, rugged coastline, rivers and estuaries. Vannes is actually the gateway to the islands of the gulf, and is an attractive town with a small harbour and a lively student population. As well as tourism, the area is sustained with a profitable oyster industry. Local attractions are varied, and include the 13th century Cathedrale St Pierre which has been heavily restored; Musee de Pont-Aven, a small museum in the nearby village which was made famous by Gaugin; and the Musee de Prehistoire in Carnac Ville. There are famous and mysterious prehistoric granite rocks dating back to 400 BC at Carnac, while a tour of the medieval Chateau Josselin is also recommended. In mid-August, Fetes d'Arvor is a festival to honour Breton customs and traditions, and includes concerts and parades.
