The capital of Beaujolais and situated just 30km from Lyon, Villefranche sur Saone was founded in the 12th century by Humbert III, Squire of Beaujeu. The motto of the town, taken from the Bourbon-Beaujeu family crest, is "Hope", and all visitors feel this emotion as they enter this picturesque and welcoming town. With its church, Renaissance houses and 17th century hospital, Villefranche sur Saone shows off its proud history, while a wide range of shops - especially in Rue Nationale - gives the tourist a chance to enjoy modern consumerism. Its location close to Lyon means that Villefranche sur Saone is an ideal starting point for exploring the area famous for its vineyards and wine. The Festival of the New Beaujolais takes place in November, and there is also a festival celebrating the wine and its culture which takes place in June and July. The district is well-known for its "machon" pubs, offering a typical salad bowl with hot pork or marinated beef. Some of the highlights at Lyon are the Saint-Jean Primatial church, the leaded fountain at Place de Terreaux, and the famous "traboules" (passageways) which meander through the old city.
