Wolverhampton

One of the four metropolitan boroughs of The Black Country, Wolverhampton is also one of the UK's new Millennium Cities, and offers visitors a wealth of attractions as well as a vastly cultural heritage. The Black Country consists of the boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall, as well as Wolverhampton, all situated to the north-west of Birmingham and only around 30 minutes from the international airport. The Black Country developed at the beginning of the industrial age, with items such as leatherware, glassware, iron and steel products being transported across the globe. Wolverhampton may be considered the major city, with its league football club, racecourse, galleries and museums attracting many visitors. The city also has a university. Wolverhampton has some outstanding night-clubs, as well as some fine restaurants and pubs, and the city tends to buzz during the evenings. Wightwick Manor is maintained by the National Trust and is one of the finest examples of the work of William Morris. The house features many of his wallpapers and fabrics, as well as paintings by leading Pre-Raphaelite artists and Kempes glass and tiles by de Morgan. Beyond the manor, there are attractive gardens, poolside walks and woodland. Another National Trust property is Moseley Old Hall, an Elizabethan house which was altered in the 19th century and is famous for its association with King Charles II, who hid here after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. There is an exhibition of the king's escape, together with a garden full of 17th century plants.
