Bosnia and herzegovina - Travel Guide

Description
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country of large mountain ranges and deep, fertile valleys where rivers meander through a country rich in valuable natural resources yet trying desperately to rebuild itself after most of its infrastructure was decimated during conflict in the early 1990's. In 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina declared its independence from former Yugoslavia; unfortunately this action resulted in Bosnia and Herzegovina becoming involved in the Bosnian War. The country is now urgently trying to recover (it is one of the poorest republics from the former Yugoslavia), and to remodel itself as a destination for holidaymakers. It already has some of the necessary equipment in place to achieve this. The coastline, which lies on the Adriatic Sea, is beautifully structured to attract visitors, with cool, clear waters and rocky coves alternating with sandy beaches. The diversity of the landscape in the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina is breath-taking in parts, although in winter the temperatures become bitterly cold and much of the country becomes covered in snow. Summers in Bosnia and Herzegovina can be extremely hot, particularly in the low-lying regions where myriads of small farms produce local goods which are sold in the busy town markets. Although the country is slowly rebuilding itself, there is still a UN peacekeeping force in place. The reconstruction of physical infrastructure in the larger cities such as the capital, Sarajevo and on the coastline, (always a magnet for potential holidaymakers), has significantly improved facilities in recent years. However, public facilities and amenities away from these areas vary in availability and quality and it is worth remembering this if you need to travel within the country. When visiting this enchanting country, it is always advisable to check the latest travel information before you leave.
