Tunisia - Travel Guide
Description
Situated in northern Africa, yet only 91 miles south of the tip of Italy, Tunisia is a hospitable land of colours and contrasts, spices and scents, and one of the most developed of the African tourist destinations. It is a country steeped in history, from the stone-age settlements near the oasis at Kebili to the space-age sets used to film Star Wars at Matmata, this lush to lunar landscape in a land of intrigue and mystery simply adds to Tunisia's character.
The Sahara Desert in the south opens out onto a hot, dry, central plain, rising to the imposing Atlas Mountains in the north. The north's climate, more Mediterranean than African, is cooler than the rest of Tunisia, a perfect place for sun-bathing.
Strategically located in the centre of North Africa, Tunisia has some of the best developed tourist areas in the whole continent, yet still retains its ancient charm. For an authentic experience, why not haggle for a bargain in the souks (markets) located in the old cities? Cultural familiarity can be increased by visiting one of the many museums, mosaic sites, archaeological areas or ruins all over this exotic country. If you're the more adventurous explorer, sample the array of water sports, camel safaris or windsurfing or, for a total chill-out, simply relax on one of Tunisia's fabulous beaches. Whatever you do, this unique African experience will be one to treasure.
